Heritage Projects

Heritage buildings are a very important aspect of the built environment to Steve. All too often, heritage buildings are incredibly special projects with great community significance. They often embody ideas of another period, indicating a layering and historical appeal that our families worked hard to create. Many places carry memories and embody character of substance and significance.

Steve is a Registered Heritage Consultant with the National Trust. His work with heritage buildings spans many aspects. Some projects involve the preservation of old structures to sustain their sound condition, so that their contributions may be maintained for longer periods of time. Other heritage projects embody an adaptive re-use strategy so that the building fabric may be re-invented, to present a new or different use to an established facility. Most heritage projects involve an element of reconstruction so that the understanding of the place may be better appreciated.

At the heart of all heritage projects is a respect for the old building fabric. Steve appreciates that usually, original buildings are special, and an appreciation of what was previously significant, is key to understanding their value.

Steve’s approach and sensitivity towards the cultural significance of our built environment is evident and well recognised in his award-winning heritage projects.

Heritage Consulting

A large part of Steve’s Heritage work is in the application of his skill to projects or parts thereof. Steve regularly consults on heritage projects as a specialised subconsultant.

Steves ability to recognise what make a historic place significant, and to appreciate how old building work and what makes them special and how to preserve the building elements make him a valuable resource for other project teams who need some extra guidance when they are tackling a heritage project.

Steve regularly consults on heritage planning applications, on specific preservation requirements and on reconstruction techniques. Steve is quite at home climbing on, in and under old buildings and loves to find out how things have been done in the past, what has lasted well and what has caused deterioration. Old buildings also require traditional techniques and methods to ensure that they continue to age and weather well. Steve has a great working knowledge of traditional building techniques and applies this knowledge to specific application for appropriate conservation and preservation works.

Gestation Period

All projects go through a gestation period. Some are quickly conceived, other take time, and some require lots of consideration.

The design process needs time to develop and to solidify concepts, to test ideas and to enable an appropriate prioritisation of values.

Some of the works in this category are some of the latest projects Steve is developing. Others represent current thinking and fresh and exciting ideas, whilst others are currently running through the usual design stages and will be delivered soon.

Some projects have not proceeded. These may be too ambitious or too elaborate. Maybe the technology isn’t there yet to make it work that way its conceived, or maybe they are just simply not feasible yet. These ideas haven’t found the right place to land. Great ideas tend to come from open minds and sometimes one needs to appreciate when to park an idea. Steve provides an innovative approach that honours the specific needs and priorities of each project, client and audience.
